WINE
Cocoon - The name says it all. This extraordinary glass series explores innovative shaping methods.
Through the application of modern techniques, a Cocoon-like structure has been crafted, offering generous space for the wine and allowing the concept of "aroma development" to take on entirely newfacets. The goblet enables optimal aeration of your wine, enhancing its aromatic profile even with a gentle swirl. As your wine rests within the Cocoon, its flavors undergo a captivating metamorphosis over time.
The emphasis on the sensory properties of the glass has given rise to a truly distinctive design that stands apart from conventional wine glasses. Its contemporary aesthetics make it an absolute eye-catcher. Next to its high-quality and elegant appearance, the glass weighs less than 150 grams, featuring a stem thickness of approximately 4.5 mm and a wall thickness ranging from 0.6 mm to 0.8 mm. These dimensions showcase the precision and innovation dedicated to the development of this glassware.
The Cocoon series encapsulates this innovation, offering meticulously tailored glassware for Burgundy, Bordeaux, Red Wine, White Wine and Champagne, along with modern wine or drink tumblers for casual elegance. At the core of these glasses lie two cocoon-inspired sections:
The lower Cocoon, the powerbox, features a basin that ends in an angular wall with an overhang. When swirled, the wine does not simply flow up the steep glasswall as usual but instead hits the edge and is thrown back into the glass. This turns the wine swirling into tumbling, which further enhances the aeration and movement of the wine, allowing the full complexity and unique aroma of the wine to unfold and be captured in the powerbox. The longer you leave your wine in the Cocoon, the more its flavour undergoes a metamorphosis.
The transition between the lower and upper Cocoon can be compared to a stonequay where ocean waves break. Similar to this effect, when the wine hits the wall of the powerbox, all the wine's aromas are released, filling the glass with an aromatic atmosphere. These aromas, also known as the bouquet, now gather in the upper Cocoon of the glass.
In many interviews with sommeliers, various glasses were reported to either emphasize the taste complexity of the wine but neglect the nose or offer a strong bouquet and intense aroma but fail to match the taste once the wine reaches the mouth. Stolzle wanted to counteract this by giving the second cocoon, above the powerbox, a upward tapering curvature.
In this upper cocoon, a fresh, straight, yet full bouquet is preserved after every swirling or tumbling of the wine. Each time the glass is brought back to the nose, this bouquet is fully present and discernible, even until the last sip.
The mouth opening is designed to make the wine's liquid precisely meet the right taste buds on the tongue. The angles are tailored to the various types of the glassseries.
Until now, such complex designs that meet all requirements were reserved for handcrafted wine glasses. However, last year, Stölzle succeeded in developing glasses that are on par with hand-blown glasses, not only in their design but also in their lightness and elegance.
